2026 Updates for Colorado SLP Candidates

Three state-specific developments matter most for prospective Colorado SLPs in 2026:

  • Colorado SLPs earn the highest mean wage of any state inland of the West Coast. BLS May 2024 data puts the Colorado annual mean at $114,410, well above the national median of $95,410. Front Range metro positions (Denver-Boulder, Colorado Springs, Fort Collins) typically run higher, while mountain and Western Slope districts offer additional rural-service stipends to address recruitment.
  • Metropolitan State University of Denver is the newest entrant. Metro State’s SLP master’s entered CAA candidate status in May 2021 and is working through its first full accreditation cycle (2021-2026). Candidate status confers ASHA certification eligibility on graduates, but applicants should track Metro State’s progression toward full accreditation.
  • Colorado is an ASLP-IC member state, but compact privileges aren’t live yet. Colorado enacted Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact legislation. As of early 2026, only Louisiana, Ohio, and West Virginia are actively issuing compact privileges through CompactConnect. Until Colorado launches, SLPs moving into the state still need to apply for DORA certification.

Colorado’s CAA-Recognized Speech-Language Pathology Programs

Colorado has three CAA-recognized SLP master’s programs in 2026: two fully accredited (University of Colorado Boulder and University of Northern Colorado) and one in candidate status (Metropolitan State University of Denver). The University of Colorado Boulder holds the longest tenure in the state, accredited continuously since 1969. The University of Northern Colorado runs the longest-running CAA-recognized distance-education modality in Colorado, going back to 2009.

Two notable programs that used to hold CAA accreditation but no longer do: Colorado State University (accredited 1971-1993) and University of Denver (accredited 1977-1986). Those institutions are not currently recognized by the CAA for SLP master’s graduate education, and graduates from those historical programs would not qualify for the ASHA CCC-SLP via those programs today.

University of Colorado Boulder — Master of Arts in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences

CU Boulder’s SLP master’s has been continuously CAA-accredited since July 1969 — the longest tenure of any program in Colorado and one of the oldest in the country. The current accreditation cycle runs 2022-2030, with the next review in 2029. The program lives in the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences within the College of Arts and Sciences and benefits from Boulder’s research-active R1 setting plus clinical placements across the Front Range from Boulder to Denver.

University of Northern Colorado — Master of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology

UNC’s program in Greeley is CAA-accredited and runs both an on-campus master’s and a CAA-recognized distance-education track that has been operating since August 2009 — one of the longest-running online SLP master’s programs in the country. The online track is primarily remote with one required two-week summer residency on the Greeley campus for laboratory work and faculty mentoring. The program is housed in Communication Sciences and Disorders within the College of Natural and Health Sciences.

Metropolitan State University of Denver — Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology

Metro State is Colorado’s newest SLP master’s program, entering CAA candidate status in May 2021. The program is in its first full accreditation cycle (2021-2026) and is based in the Department of Speech, Language, Hearing Sciences in downtown Denver. Candidate status means current graduates are eligible for ASHA certification, though applicants should track the program’s progression toward full accreditation through its CAA reviews.

Frequently Asked Questions: Colorado SLP Programs

How many CAA-accredited SLP master’s programs are in Colorado?

Three CAA-recognized programs: University of Colorado Boulder (accredited since 1969), University of Northern Colorado (accredited; with a distance-education track since 2009), and Metropolitan State University of Denver (CAA candidate since 2021). Colorado State University and University of Denver are sometimes referenced in older program lists; both lost CAA accreditation decades ago and are not currently recognized.

How long does it take to become a certified SLP in Colorado?

About six years total: four for a bachelor’s degree (in communication sciences and disorders or a related field), two for a CAA-accredited or candidate master’s program, and a 36-week Clinical Fellowship under a licensed CCC-SLP. After the fellowship and a passing Praxis 5331 score, you apply for certification through the Colorado Office of Speech-Language Pathology Certification.

Why does Colorado call it “certification” instead of “licensure”?

It’s a state-specific regulatory convention. Most states issue a “license” to SLPs through a board of examiners; Colorado’s Division of Professions and Occupations issues a “certification” through DORA instead. Functionally, the two terms mean the same thing — both authorize independent SLP practice. Colorado’s certification requires the same elements: CAA-accredited master’s, Clinical Fellowship, and Praxis exam.

How much do speech-language pathologists make in Colorado?

The mean annual wage for SLPs in Colorado is $114,410 (BLS, May 2024) — meaningfully above the national median of $95,410. Denver-Boulder metro positions in medical and rehabilitation settings tend to run on the higher end. Mountain districts and rural placements sometimes pay slightly less in base salary but offer rural-service stipends or housing assistance.

Can I do my SLP master’s online while living in Colorado?

Yes. University of Northern Colorado runs the longest-running CAA-recognized distance-education SLP master’s in the state (since 2009). Several out-of-state online programs also accept Colorado residents — see our best online SLP programs guide. Confirm CAA accreditation or candidacy status so the program qualifies you for DORA certification and the ASHA CCC-SLP.

Does Colorado participate in the ASLP-IC interstate compact?

Yes — Colorado has enacted ASLP-IC compact legislation. However, the compact is not yet fully operational: as of early 2026, only Louisiana, Ohio, and West Virginia are issuing compact privileges through CompactConnect. Until Colorado launches, SLPs moving into the state still need a full DORA certification. Track the ASLP-IC homepage for state launch dates.
